Not Y’all Come

I stared out the window, daydreaming.  Scheming.  Planning.  Evaluating.  Wondering.  Praying.  How can I make this connect for them?  It seemed like each time I asked them about making disciples, they wanted to tell me how we can invite someone to church.  Yes, not a bad idea.  But I’m not convinced that’s what making disciples really looks like.  I don’t think reaching the least of these looks anything like passing out invitations to an event or posting announcements on fancy lighted boards in the front yards of our churches.  No, I’m thinking it looks more like lacing up our tennis shoes and rolling up our sleeves to get our hands dirty.  I don’t think it’s fancy lights and cool clothes and loud music and fun PowerPoint slides.  I’m thinking it’s shorts and t-shirts in a campground.  It’s hoodies and jeans, passing out blankets and hot soup to those sleeping outside.  I think it’s pulling up a seat next to the guy who sits by himself in the cafeteria every single day and having lunch, caring about what’s going on his world.  Telling our stories of how Jesus Christ changed our lives and longs to do the same for them.  Old school church programming isn’t working anymore.  I’m learning that Jesus said, “GO make disciples” not “hey, y’all come”.
Lord, how am I to translate in my little corner of the world these days?
